3/23/2023 • 52m
Today I talk with Dr. Simon Collins from Stackr, a New Zealand Bitcoin mining company. In this episode we discuss Simon's thoughts on Jason Lowery's latest book about power projection in a Bitcoin world. We also explore the abstract category of "value transfer" and how the vantage point of Bitcoin can provide a way to explore this, similar to how the internet provided a new way to look at communication. Simon is always great to talk with. He will be speaking at the Bitcoin Alive conference in Sydney next month, so check out his details below to follow along. ...
Growing Up With Bitcoin: How Kids Learn About Money and Value with Bitkiwi Paul
3/17/2023 • 1hr 0m
I talk with Paul from Bitkiwi, who organise New Zealand's premiere bitcoin events.  In this episode we talk about how children and young people learn about and interact with money, and how these early experiences can shape their world-view and their understanding of value.  The analogy of growing up as a digital native, or in a bilingual family is useful here.  As children naturally learn about sound money and Bitcoin-thinking amongst the backdrop of the legacy fiat system they grow up into adults ready to face a changing financial world.  Please note, this episode is from a coup...
The Success and Challenges of Bitcoin in El Salvador with Roberto Osegueda
3/10/2023 • 1hr 19m
I talk with Roberto Osegueda, a Salvadorian living here in New Zealand.  We talk about Roberto's experience growing up in El Salvador among the backdrop of the civil war and gang violence, and how the country has managed to massively change its image over the last few years for the better. El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021 and Roberto shares a very interesting take on the successes and the challenges of Bitcoin as a currency, and how it can perhaps serve as a positive model for other countries in Latin America and the world. L...
Decentralised Dairy Farming in New Zealand with Glen Herud
3/3/2023 • 1hr 3m
I talk with Glen Herud, the founder of Happy Cow Milk Company. Glen is focussed on decentralised dairy farming, where individual farmers are able to process and pasteurise their milk themselves using Glen's hardware specs, and connect in with a platform for supply and distribution of dairy products directly to businesses and consumers.   In New Zealand the existing dairy industry is highly centralised and export focussed often at the expense of the local market. Though Happy Cow Milk Company is not specifically a Bitcoin business, by the end of this conversation I found many parallels with Bitcoin-thinking a...

CASH and bitcoin ... PERMISSIONLESS (P2P).
@codyellingham
27 Jan
I am not happy when I see a shop with a sign saying “we are cashless”. It excludes a whole group of people (including me now) from going there, and they might not even know because cards are so common.
@mrmr
27 Jan
yeah ditto here. many states/cities in the US have passed laws to ban this discrimination. sadly, i suspect some businesses are doing this to stop internal theft (think staff skimming the til). many are franchises so they do not set their own policy. but the smaller ones, i gently let them know ONCE, and then NEVER give them another cent. AND i steer others away whenever i can. oh and then there's the pressure (and incentives) from the banks. this seems likely to be the driver.. incentives.

great show title, great guest. . "cash is fungible and anonymous" what does this have to do with BTC/XBT/'bitcoin'? (BTC is neither) . 'cash as a fallback' in nz? . good luck. ATM's are closing/removed. . CASH is full and FINAL settlement. . . use XMR (monero) for fungibility / anon. * good grief * coin co-operation is the way to go. . i like your idea of a 'new years resolution' to use/carry cash. might buy you lunch, if EFTPOS goes down, right? . ALL: look in the mirror. the enemy is within.
