2024 Top Stories

Podcasts predicted the outcome of the 2024 US election

Every presidential election is a snapshot in time of the media landscape, and this election will go down in history as "The Podcast Election". The Colin and Samir Show reported that Donald Trump got 124m views from 14 podcast appearances, including The Joe Rogan Experience and The All-In Podcast. Meanwhile, Harris got 4m views from just 5 appearances. These are just the stats from YouTube, but it's fair to assume that data from podcast apps would tell a similar story. Did somebody say podcasts are losing their cultural influence?

A breakthrough year for Bitcoin

Thanks in part to the result of the presidential election, it has been a phenomenal year for Bitcoin, which was up more than 150% from the start of the year to the all time high of $108,239 recorded on 17th December 2024. Meanwhile, annual inflation in the US stood at around 2.7%. In other words, podcasters and artists getting paid in Bitcoin won, while those getting paid in dollars were hit by the invisible tax. While listeners on Fountain sent slightly less to creators in bitcoin in 2024 compared to last year, total support in dollar terms was up 60%.

Podcasting 2.0 entered the mainstream

In March, Apple announced that they would make its own transcripts available for new episodes or allow podcasters to supply their own. Pocket Casts followed by adding support for transcripts and chapters too. Not only was this a big step forward for accessibility, but seeing popular apps with millions of users starting to get behind these new features was a vote of confidence in the project. There are some Podcasting 2.0 features that these apps will never implement (Apple has its own index of podcasts and it has Apple Pay), but in 2025 we hope to see more features get supported where it makes sense.

Music distribution and discovery is changing

Of all the new features and mediums being supported in RSS feeds, music saw the biggest growth in adoption in 2024 (the number of feeds containing music was up over 150%). RSS gives artists open distribution to a growing number of apps and Lightning allows them to get paid directly by listeners. Unlike the post-Napster business model, your income is about how much listeners value your music - not how much Spotify value (or undervalue) your music. To help the growing number of artists publishing their music to RSS feeds get discovered, we launched Fountain Radio. You can pay to add a track to a global queue, hang out in the live chat and support the artists directly. We've had 10 artists host takeovers on Fountain Radio in December, and we're excited to welcome more in 2025.

Nostr showed us the way forward

In August, we became the first podcast app to integrate Nostr - a simple, decentralised messaging protocol that allows social activity to be shared across different apps. It is now possible to bring your existing profile and follower graph to Fountain, but the killer feature is that your boosts and comments now get surfaced in other Nostr clients - and users on those apps can interact with your posts. The Nostr protocol is evolving rapidly and apps are laying the foundations for what could be a breakthrough year in 2025 - and we hope to see more podcast apps to Nostr to bring the ecosystem together through a common language.

Rabbit Hole Recap

Rabbit Hole Recap is a bitcoin news show hosted by Marty Bent and Matt Odell. Over the last three years, RHR has become one of the most-loved shows among Fountain listeners (affectionately known as ‘freaks’). In 2022 they were #3, in 2023 they were #2, and in 2024 they finally claimed the #1 spot. Congratulations, Marty and ODELL. Your dedication and humility is an inspiration to bitcoiners around the world.

SHOW WITH MOST SUPPORTERS

Mr Obnoxious

Peter McCormack announced earlier this year that What Bitcoin Did, the preeminent podcast he has hosted for as long as we can remember, would come to an end to make way for a new show, Mr Obnoxious. In December, the Real Bedford FC owner announced that Danny Knowles would be the new custodian - much to the relief of the 800 listeners who supported the show this year. Thanks for everything, Pete!

MOST SUPPORTed EPISODE

LINUX Unplugged | 545: 3,062 Days Later

LINUX Unplugged is just one of many popular shows about open-source, security and privacy from Jupiter Broadcasting. Editor-in-chief Chris Fisher finishes the year with three shows in Fountain's top 40. How? He and his co-hosts have made boosting a core part of the listener experience, with his audience often sending "zip code boosts" (which can get pretty expensive if you live in Alaska).

MOST SUPPORTed ARTIST

Ainsley Costello

At just 20 years old, Ainsley has been working toward a career in music for over half her life. Her music is the modern pop soundtrack of the next generation. Ainsley first made "waves" on the internet in August 2023 as the first artist to receive 1 million sats with her hit song “Cherry On Top.” Since then, she has inspired countless artists to follow her path, becoming the face of this exciting new movement.

ARTIST WITH MOST SUPPORTERS

Man Like Kweks

Don Kweka is a producer and rapper from Tanzania. When he's not at his desk working his 9 to 5, he's making beats in his bedroom - and he has been prolific in 2024. Earlier this year he told Forbes he had earned a total of $25.68 from United Masters, the distribution company he uses for traditional DSPs (for which he pays a $60 annual fee). Since first publishing his music on Wavlake, he’s earned 2.3 million sats (over $2,000).

MOST SUPPORTed TRACK

Abi Muir | Stockholm

Born in Scotland and now residing in Australia, Abi’s distinctive, goosebump-inducing vocals and heartfelt lyrics define her creative songwriting. Her unique style sees her delivering memorable, catchy pop songs of singer-songwriter prose with a contemporary pop sound. In Stockholm she explores a darker, harder edge to her music that crosses into alt-rock, topped with Muir's piercing, sultry vocals.

MOST SUPPORTed LIVE SHOW

Bands at Bitcoin, Embassy Suites, Downtown Nashville

For the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville this summer, Phantom Power Music hosted three days of free live music to showcase the power of lightning and other open protocols like RSS and Nostr. An eclectic line up of emerging artists took to the stage at Embassy Suites Downtown, including Joe Martin, Sara Jade and Herbivore. Nearly 3.7m sats were sent in total (around $3,500) across all apps showing the livstream.

MOST SUPPORTed MUSIC show

Boostagram Ball

Boostagram Ball is the first (and foremost) music show, hosted by Adam Curry. When we say "music show", we mean a podcast which includes music from artists that the audience can support as they are listening. Boostagram Ball is like a drive time radio show powered by bitcoin. Tune in live on Fountain to hear the hottest new releases.
