The way this works for me is I get excited about something and add on to it to keep myself going. For example, I am excited to provide Jellyfin for my household. So I get the basics set up. WIN. Already watched a movie together and it was well recieved. WIN. Next I'll figure out how to run a VPN for the torrent traffic only. That will be a WIN. I'm already motivated for the next one, Jellyseer. And if the roomies like & use it, WIN.

I am really vibing on the idea of Stacking W's as Chris likes to put it. And it is working for me! As a person who struggles with motivation and focus at times, it has really been helping me to find things I can be excited about that involve discreet steps I can take and feel good about. And while I know that I am a really capable person, I struggle with a lot of self-doubt. So the baby-steps approach to stacking wins has had the side effect of making me feel more confident in myself.

Next will probably be tackling the music collection and looking into the Jellyfin music player stuff. All this on NixOS, which is making me very happy working up my still nascent Nix chops. That's a bonus WIN. And when I am satisfied with all that, then I am ready to tackle NixOS on the Framework (daily driver). That will be a big self-satisfying WIN.

I've avoided Snaps for years just because I've gotten bad vibes from Canonical with their handling of Snaps since they were introduced. As far as I'm concerned this thuggish behavior from Canonical pushing/forcing every flavor to do this just seals it for me that I'm pretty much done with Ubuntu. Guess it's a good thing I've gotten so used to RHEL based distros over the last few years so I'll have no problem switching to Fedora.

One of the nice things about zfs send is that (and I imagine btrfs might be able to do this as well) you can just pipe it over ssh (i.e. zfs send <volume>@<snapshot> | ssh <remote_host> zfs recv <dest_volume>). Then the remote system you can do zfs allow to permit that user to manage zfs thing (instead of root login) https://superuser.com/a/1483245

So, you can actually use python to create a simple web server: python3 -m http.server We typically (when a client has egress web request filtering) use this to serve exploits over the network from our remote access machine so it's on their LAN 😁 This rust version might be helpful in containers though, since you can typically statically compile rust. So, thanks for the app pick 😁

The other nice thing you can do with ZFS (and maybe with btrfs) is just do a zfs send | ssh Then on the remote system you can do zfs allow to allow them to take action (i.e. create the remotely received send) on the file system. This type of functionality is pretty well documented because it's been used for years.

The nice thing about ZFS and OpenZFS now being more prominent on Linux systems (i.e. in an Ubuntu installer). That gives you the ease of access to load a ZFS drive from an Ubuntu live ISO, so you can worry less about not having some way to access your data (probably same for btrfs, but I haven't personally used btrfs like that before or much at all honestly)

Continuing on from my previous boost. I am also looking forward to zfs 3.0, which will support using zfs on S3 object storage. Since I started using zfs snapshots as local backup, I have never quite enjoyed using any third party backup tool to back up at the file level off site. If I mess up a file, I always turn to my backed up snapshots to retrieve data, as the experience and workflow is less complicated.

With regards to using filesystem snapshots for backups, I prefer the workflow of zfs snapshots over btrfs. Zfs snapshot workflows feel more seemless to me and let me focus on what I am wanting to do. I particularly like zfs dataset rollback functionality.

We are constantly looking for new folks, especially devs, not because of turnover but growth. Folks in my specific office are frequently pushing over 100% billable hours. You'd probably have a better time using a GPU instead of CPU core. Typically those ML models are better tuned for GPUs (from my very limited experience 😅). IIRC Linode offers GPU rigs, and docker containers support GPU pass through. You'll just probably need to use the nvidia containers as your base image so you have the right driver.
