Deathwatch – TEDERICK.COM
Deathwatch is a monthly podcast which goes into production anytime one of the “greats” from the history of film, television, or other pop culture dies. Matt Brown and Matt Price will convene, each having watched one work from the deceased person's canon that they had not previously seen. They will then place those works in the context of the career as a whole, offering facts and wisdom and occasional bon-mots, in a roughly half-hour audio show, to be posted on the final Friday of every month.
THE MOVIES (1895-2020)
For the final episode of Deathwatch, we look at the final nail in the coffin of mainstream moviegoing, and how the movies as a popular art form are about to die, transform, and be reborn.

SYD MEAD (1933-2019)
Futurist Syd Mead showed the whole world what 2019 would look like way back in 1982 and then, weirdly enough, ended up dying in 2019. I smell a conspiracy. Meantime, Matthew Price gives us the longest Roll Call of all time. Listen in!

RUTGER HAUER (1944-2019)
Rutger Hauer was a wild actor with a widely diverse array of roles — some of them all-time great (Blade Runner!), some of them…. not so much. We look at Nighthawks and Flesh + Blood as ways of getting at this weird cat.

TONI MORRISON (1931-2019)
Author Toni Morrison leaves a huge shadow behind her as she leaves this world and moves on to the next — and we are ill-equipped to discuss. We give it a crack, though, with talk about Beloved and Tar Baby.

RIP TORN (1931-2019)
Or as we like to say on the podcast, RIP Rip. We look at two wildly different films from the great character actor’s legacy: Coming Apart (1969) and Extreme Prejudice (1987).

LARRY COHEN (1936-2019)
This month, death takes a holiday — so we return to an honouree from earlier in the year, B-movie director Larry Cohen, with discussion of his films Black Caesar and God Told Me To.

JOHN SINGLETON (1968-2019)
John Singleton passed away, way too young, in April of this year, having directed only 10 features. We look back at some of the most important, from Boyz n the Hood to 2 Fast 2 Furious.
AGNÈS VARDA (1928-2019)
The film world mourns as the funny old cat lady with the red and white fringe goes to the great beyond. Agnès Varda was one of the most influential (and, until relatively recently, undersung) French filmmakers of the 20th century, who continued to work right up until her death. To celebrate her life, we watch VAGABOND and THE BEACHES OF AGNÈS. Also, for reasons no one can explain, we indulge in a lot of OT talk about Star Trek.
STANLEY DONEN (1924-2019)
The last surviving director of Hollywood's "Golden Age" died in February and we're gonna talk about it, by way of Stanley Donen's films INDISCREET and TWO FOR THE ROAD.
ALBERT FINNEY (1936-2019)
An actor who made a mark in six consecutive decades of film, Albert Finney is the first 2019 death to make it to Deathwatch. We look at his films UNDER THE VOLCANO and TOM JONES while discussing the impact of his career as a whole.
PENNY MARSHALL (1943-2018)
The first female director to break the $100M-grossing club, Penny Marshall got her start in TV before transitioning into a weirdly brief, highly beloved career as a feature film director. For today's episode we look at her debut feature, Jumpin' Jack Flash, before moving on to the one she'll be remembered for, A League Of Their Own.
GEORGE H.W. BUSH (1924-2018)
The 41st president of the United States, George H.W. Bush presided over one of the greatest health emergencies in American history and was directly or indirectly responsible for well north of a million people. Here at Deathwatch, that's worth a show.
RAYMOND CHOW (1927-2018)
With his Golden Harvest production company, Raymond Chow turned the kung fu movie into an international phenomenon and gave us such megastars as Tsui Hark, Jackie Chan, and (of course) Bruce Lee. Today the Deathwatch team looks at ENTER THE DRAGON and FIST OF FURY... or is it THE BIG BOSS?
MAMO 500: Fantastic Crimes And Where To Grind Them
...
BURT REYNOLDS (1936-2018)
What about Burt? Arguably the biggest moviestar of the 1970s, Burt Reynolds' career had its ups and downs in the '80s, '90s and beyond, but we're going straight to the good stuff for this episode with a look at Deliverance and Hooper.
ARETHA FRANKLIN (1942-2018)
The Queen of Soul passed away last month and we are here to talk about it. Who are we? D-E-A-T-H-W-A-T-C-H. Sing a song about it.
SHINOBU HASHIMOTO (1918-2018)
This prolific screenwriter collaborated with Akira Kurosawa through the most fruitful period of that director's career; accidentally helped birth STAR WARS; and with RASHOMON, may have permanently redefined the concept and structure of narrative itself. This month we look at THE OUTRAGE (1964, an American remake of RASHOMON) and Masaki Kobayashi's masterful 1962 film HARA KIRI by way of getting at the career of the late, great Shinobu Hashimoto.
ANTHONY BOURDAIN (1956-2018)
The news of Anthony Bourdain's sudden death by suicide in June rolled across the world like a wave. The Deathwatch team dives into his work and holds up a life well lived.
ANNE V. COATES (1925-2018)
Wanna start a fight with a cinephile? Ask whether the match cut (which is NOT a match cut) from Lawrence of Arabia, or the bone cut from 2001: A Space Odyssey, is the greatest single edit of all time. Regardless, Anne V. Coates is one hell of an editor.
ISAO TAKAHATA (1935-2018)
Co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata passed away last month having directed far less features than his better-known (over here anyway) counterpart, Hayao Miyazaki. But here's the little secret: every one of Takahata's films (of which we look at Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko and Only Yesterday) are GREAT.
ROGER EBERT (1942-2013)
The Deathwatch team hits the road to the 20th annual Ebertfest to discuss the life and career of film critic (and, at least once, film writer) Roger Ebert.
JOHN MAHONEY (1940-2018)
One of many people who have proven that you're never too old to follow your passion, John Mahoney started acting in his late thirties and became one of the most beloved character actors (and sitcom dads) in America. For our retrospective, Matt Price looks at STREETS OF GOLD and BETRAYED, while Matt Brown dives into BARTON FINK.
JERRY LEWIS (1926-2017)
GLAVIN! Jerry Lewis is dead! Did laughter die with him? Matt Brown tackles Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Matt Price looks at The Bellboy and The Ladies Man, and many horrible impressions are exchanged.
MICHAEL BALLHAUS (1935-2017)
A longtime collaborator with Rainier Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese, Michael Ballaus passed away in 2017 leaving a legacy of great cinematography. We dig into THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and THE HOUSE ON CARROLL STREET as an entry point to discuss what, exactly, the cameraman brings to a motion picture.
CARRIE FISHER (1956-2016)
With The Last Jedi in theatres, and by way of commemorating the one-year anniversary of her death, we look at the life and career of the indomitable Carrie Fisher, with side-trips to Postcards From The Edge and Wishful Drinking.
HUGH HEFNER (1926-2017)
Our first NSFW episode? We look at the life, career and impact of Hugh Hefner, who brought Playboy into the world and permanently altered Western society's conception of women.
HARRY DEAN STANTON (1926-2017)
Welcome to Deathwatch! Every month, as one of the legends of pop culture passes away, we'll have a look back at two films from his or her career, and place it in the context of the career as a whole. And we picked a doozie for our maiden episode, because Harry Dean Stanton (1926-2017) appeared in over 200 films! Matt Price checks out Monte Hellman's Cockfighter (1974) while Matt Brown dives into Wim Wenders' Paris Texas (1984).
