This is the second Stave, or "chapter" of a Christmas Carol, in which Scrooge encounters the Ghost of Christmas Past. As I read this, carefully for the first time in years, it becomes obvious just what an incredible genius Dickens was, in terms of observing and writing about the human state. He was equal to Shakespeare, Tolstoy, or Rand.
