Fibromyalgia is a progressive syndrome that is a central pain pattern that affects all four quadrants. Fibromyalgia must present a history of pain in all four quadrants of the body lasting more than 3 months. Pain in all four quadrants means that you have pain in both your right and left sides, as well as above and below the waist. Dr. Roselle also discusses wind-up pain. Wind-up pain is caused by a series of events in synapses and in nerve cells. This condition is known as central sensitization or wind-up phenomenon and leads to nonresponsive or chronic intractable pain.
