Debate or Dehumanization: How Do We Talk About the People We Do Not Agree With?
Send us a text( Raw & Unedited Episode) The recent US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade has led to heated debate on both sides of the topic. I personally am pro-choice and find the decision apaling. However, I draw the line at wishing harm on the Supreme Court justices. I have seen death threats made against the justices and hurtful, dehumanizing remarks made about them.So I ask, can we disagree with someone without wishing them evil? Can we feel angry, hurt, even violated without turning political opponents into subhumans that we take joy in seeing harmed?I turned to a trusted source, Brene Brown, and her book "Braving the Wilderness" to get some insight into this topic. Brene says, "We must never tolerate dehumanization- the primary instrument of violence that has been used in every genocide recorded throughout history."I am interested in hearing what you have to say on this topic.
