Episode 100: Fortress Not Trustworthy
Pre-Show
A very reasonable discussion on HN around the WTF Happened in 1971 (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37482646) website, the world is complicated, there are many ways to interpret history and the present, none are particularly satisfying
News
Binance.US cuts third of staff as CEO Brian Shroder leaves (https://cointelegraph.com/news/binance-us-cuts-third-of-staff-ceo-brian-shroder-leaves-report)
Binance.US, the United States arm of the crypto exchange, has cut around a third of its staff — or 100 positions — with its president and CEO Brian Shroder also departing the firm.
Binance.US Statment to CoinTelegraph:
“The [Securities and Exchange Commission’s] aggressive attempts to cripple our industry and the resulting impacts on our business have real-world consequences for American jobs and innovation, and this is an unfortunate example of that.”
They also say "not dead yet!"
“more than seven years of financial runway” amid its move to becoming a crypto-only exchange.
Cool post on the Japanese bitcoin community (https://stacker.news/items/250544), I knew wiz and Arthur Hayes hang out in Japan, but would love to incorporate the bitcoin scene into a trip there
Fortress Lost Customer Funds Prior to Acquisition by Ripple (https://www.nobsbitcoin.com/fortress-lost-customer-funds-prior-to-acquisition-by-ripple/)
The Fortress Trust security breach (https://web3isgoinggreat.com/?id=fortress-trust-breach) is a fiat story, its not scary or exciting, just predictable with the ancient messy tech stack that U.S. corporate financial IT demands
Economics
Is an introduction to U.S. debt collection (https://www.bitsaboutmoney.com/archive/the-waste-stream-of-consumer-finance/) economics? It's certainly historical, and it speaks to the fragility of legacy financial agreements when compared to the on chain assurances of bitcoin

A Paper Computer for Bitcoin? Codex32 with Andrew Poelstra (SLP506)
A ‘paper computer’ for Bitcoin checksums and Shamir Secret Sharing may seem absurd, but that’s what we’re talking about in this episode! This project is a scheme to generate, encode, checksum, split and recover Bitcoin secret keys, using pencil, paper and lookup tables (alternately, volvelles). We discuss codex32 and the motivation behind it with Andrew Poelstra (Director of Research, Blockstream). Note this is the first of a two part episode. In this first part we discuss:
Bitcoin private keys today
Multi signature and Shamir Secret Sharing contrasted
Where to keep shards or keys
Error correction
Risks with Hardware wallets (even though you should still use them)
BIP39 vs codex32
Limitations of the paper computer (Volvelles)

Roman Storm and Roman Semenov allegedly operated Tornado Cash and knowingly facilitated this money laundering. While publicly claiming to offer a technically sophisticated privacy service, Storm and Semenov in fact knew that they were helping hackers and fraudsters conceal the fruits of their crimes

The allegations include that the defendants: (a) paid for web hosting services for a user interface that allowed users to send transaction messages to the underlying smart contracts (https://www.coincenter.org/education/key-concepts/smart-contracts/), (b) paid for a software repository (Github) where smart contract and user interface software and documentation was hosted, and (c) had (for a time before May 2020) “complete control” over the Tornado Cash (https://www.coincenter.org/education/advanced-topics/how-does-tornado-cash-work/) smart contracts.

There's been some moderate hype (with the inevitable price speculation/manipulation aka p'n'd) last year around a proof of work project called Kaspa. I'm not invested (yet) because I'd love first to know your opinion, my technological analysis skills are lacking. I understand all the buzz is about their GhostDAG protocol posed to solve the historical dilemma way more efficiently than Lightning and the fact that they fair launched with no premined/presold coins and no company behind the project

The Kaspa Founding Contributors. The Architects Behind Kaspa’s Success (https://medium.com/kaspa-currency/the-kaspa-founding-contributors-c2f06a2eb74c)
Kaspa is the fastest, open-source, decentralized & fully scalable Layer-1 in the world.
The world’s first blockDAG – a digital ledger enabling parallel blocks and instant transaction confirmation – built on a robust proof-of-work engine with rapid
single-second block intervals.
Built by industry pioneers, led by the people.
"completely open source with no central governance – following in the ethos of coins like Bitcoin, Litecoin, or Monero."
💰 Initial funding from Polychain Capital supported Kaspa's launch, and the project forgoes allocations or premine to ensure transparency and fairness.
👥 Yonatan Sompolinsky, Michael Sutton, Shai Wyborski, Elichai Turkel, Ori Newman, and Mike Zak are key contributors and core developers of Kaspa.
Launch Date
November 7, 2021
(no premine, no allocated coins)
Uses lots of Rust, Go, and others
KAS has a circulating supply of 12.4B and maximum supply of 28.7B. It was launched with no re-mine, 0 pre-sales, and no token allocations.
It has an emission program that halves yearly through seamless monthly reductions by a factor of (1/2)^(1/12).

Proof of Work
BlockDAG
How they solve the Blockchain Trilemma
To solve this tradeoff, Kaspa’s consensus layer uses GhostDAG, a proof-of-work consensus protocol that generalizes Nakamoto’s chain into a directed acyclic graph of blocks ( blockDAG). GhostDAG incorporates”orphan” blocks into the chain to form a blockDAG, and then uses a novel greedy algorithm to order the blocks such that well-connected, honest blocks are favored, quickly and with high probability. GhostDAG allows Kaspa to circumvent the traditional tradeoff of blockchains, improving on block rate by orders of magnitude while maintaining the theoretical security guarantees of Bitcoin.

Great pod! Last Apple product I owned was an iPhone 5. Was so frustrating I switched to Android and never looked back.
Something not talked about with CBDC's is that there is no competition. If you don't like the service from your bank, you can switch to another bank. Under a government CBDC's there is no free market. It's like only being able to buy a car produced by the state.
