After he heads back to work, we get into the movie itself. It is very appropriate listening and watching for the darkest month.

It was a honor to speak with Kristian Olsson to have a very deep discussion on not only his history, but his thoughts and philosophy on the underground. Our talk demanded it to be a two-parter, so for this first part, we go over Kristian’s early days, starting Survival Unit, connecting and working with Blood ov Thee Christ, and the newly announced Survival Unit/Grey Wolves collaboration tape. Mike and Tara walk Greh thru the process, how bad Mike is at storing cables, all the unnecessary stuff that has been kept and so much more. Let this be an inspiration to get your studio in gear for a noise summer. For the ExtraNoisextra segment, instead of extra audio, we made a video of the before, middle and after of the reorganization day. Head to the patreon to see what the Connellys accomplish
In Conversation with Joachim Nordwall (Ideal Recordings, Börft Records)
Joachim Nordwall of Ideal Recordings and previously Börft Records joins us today. We discuss growing up and discovering underground industrial and noise in Sweden in the 80s, being a central figure in bringing bands to Sweden, and much more. Joachim has had boots on the ground since he was 13 years old with no end in sight. Ideal celebrates its 25th year this year, so it was a perfect time to get into Joachim’s history. For the extra-long ExtraNoisextra segment on the patreon, Greh and Joachim g
Various Artists – The Beast 666
Enter a mysterious realm with the classic Nekrophile Rekords compilation "The Beast 666." A truly legendary release, we discuss all the details and references with the titles, cover art and more. Assume the entry pose and let the sea of Cefalu wash over your mind’s landscape. "The Beast 666" is one of the great artifacts of the industrial underground.
Thirdorgan – Jinzoningen
With the full NWN/Hospital Japan Fest line up announced, we go all in on Thirdorgan, the cyborg of night two. "Jinzonigen" is Thirdorgan’s 1998 LP on Harbinger Sound. We answer the questions posed in the track titles. We prepare for the dystopian future where Hakaider and Loch Ness Monster will lead us to new lands. Thirdorgan is the harshest of them all, and this LP showcases exactly why. Do you believe?
In Conversation with Ron Morelli (L.I.E.S. Records)
Ron Morelli (L.I.E.S. Records ) joins us today to discuss a different branch of experimental electronics. Ron’s ambient albums are Noisextra favorites. We dig into those, as well as his history in techno, his L.I.E.S. Records label, and his fantastic new album "Heart Stopper." Ron brings a unique perspective to the underground and it was a blast hanging out and having this discussion.
Haus Arafna – Children of God
Continuing with our look at classic albums of the past, we enter a world that is very close to Greh's heart. Haus Arafna’s "Children of God" is a unique record in their own lane of industrial. Self-called "angst pop," we get into the structured noise of this long running German project. Tune in for some electronic terrorism.
For the ExtraNoisextra segment on the patreon, we discuss the Galakthorrö label and why it is a standout among labels of a similar ilk.
Controlled Bleeding – Distress Signals
It’s our first episode on a Broken Flag cassette, and Controlled Bleeding "Distress Signals" felt like the appropriate entry to dive into. Controlled Bleeding have always taken their own path, and even this early on, we see glimpses of zones they will enter in the future. This soundtrack for nihilism will rub you raw.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
"Tetsuo : The Iron Man" is a film that has been an influence on countless noise and industrial artists, so for a different style episode, we cover this legendary Japanese film. Metal fetish, sexual obsession and pure do-it-yourself underground aesthetics place this movie firmly in the Noisextra world. For many people, this was their first taste of Japanese extremity, for two Noisextra hosts this is their first time watching. How did they feel? Pierce your thigh with a metal rod and find out.
Masonna – Noisextra
With the announcement of Masonna’s first set in years at the NWN/Hospital fest in Osaka, we instantly knew it was time to finally discuss the CD that is our namesake. It’s all things Masonna today, and will be for the next year until we get to finally see the Sonic Devil himself live in Japan.
Dave Gilden discussion with Jim Haras
Jim Haras (Deterge) is releasing a massive Dave Gilden box set on his Fusty Cunt label. Jim was in town, so he came over to the Connelly household to have a talk about Gilden and the process of putting the box set together. Dave Gilden’s work was once of the least attainable, but there’s been a vast unearthing of his material in the past few years, and Jim’s box set will be a huge look at Gilden’s discography. In addition, we get into Jim’s noise history.
MB – Aktivitat
We remain in the zone for stone cold classics, and it felt like a fitting time to revisit some MB. “Aktivitat” was Greh’s first MB album, and it sounds as hypnotically destroyed as ever. The past remains alive in the atmosphere of the forever work of Maruzio Bianchi. For the ExtraNoisextra segment in the patreon, we discuss a just released modern classic as well as some other choice listening.Follow us on Instagram: @noisextraFollow us on Twitter: @noisextraaaSupport us on Patreon: patreon.com/no
In Conversation with Blister Pack
The mountain men of Blister Pack join us today for a great talk on '90s noise, true crime, video stores, and so much more. Emerson Murray and Nik Weisend were not only Blister Pack, but ran the Plague in Perspective label that focused on special packing. They both have solo projects — Nik as Hive and Emerson under his own name — and both have continued on different paths of art, from visual to the written word.
Brighter Death Now – Innerwar
Classic album overview time is here again. Brighter Death Now's "Innerwar" is a pivotal album for industrial PE. In Conversation with Christoph Heemann
Having recently discussed his collaboration CD with Merzbow, we thought it’d be a great time to have a conversation with Christoph Heemann. One of the main culprits behind H.N.A.S, Ultra, Mirror and so much more, Christoph provided some incredible insight and an equally incredible laugh. This is a great historical episode that looks at the underground from the '80s and beyond.
For the extra segment on the Patreon, Christoph talks about working with David Tibet and being a part of Current 93's "

In Conversation with Gerald Stevens (Erinys)
We are always fascinated with one off albums on classic labels, so it was cool to have a conversation with Gerald Stevens of Erinys, who released one CD in Tesco in 1998. In addition to his album, Stevens was an early inspiration for Greh to begin making contact mics. It’s a cool discussion from the distant days of the 1990s.
Chris Watson – Weather Report
In keeping with tradition, we dive into the waters of field recordings for February and this time we discuss on of the classics of the genre - "Weather Report" by Chris Watson. Having spent time in Cabaret Voltaire and Hafler Trio, Waston set out on a lifelong journey recording in the field. "Weather Report" was his first compositional album in this style, and we get into every aspect of each track, from titles to location to possible sounds heard.
Mortar – self-titled
It’s the dead of winter and a Slaughter Productions tape felt appropriate for seasonal hibernation. Mortar’s self titled cassette fit the bill perfectly. Mortar is a necro project of Moreno Daldosso of Murder Corporation. Ancient times, old stones, sand, dirt, and storms are all present on this excellent 90s Italian cassette. Let this be the soundtrack to your crypt.
Contagious Orgasm – The Flow of Sound Without Parameter
Following up last week’s episode, we wanted to discuss an album by an artist from "Japanese/American Noise Treaty," and we landed on Contagious Orgasm "The Flow of Sound Without Parameter" on Ground Fault. It’s a Series II CD and is as strange as it is wonderful. We love Ground Fault and we love Contagious Orgasm, so you can guess how we feel about this one. Hydrate your thirsty teeth and head out on your mission.
The Japanese/American Noise Treaty (with Mason Jones)
Class is back in session for another mandatory noise history lesson as we had a great discussion about "The Japanese/American Noise Treaty" with the man who curated it, Mason Jones. Mason gives us all the background and history of putting this mammoth document together. We get into the order, how artists were chosen, why some aren’t on it, the design and layout, and so much more. It’s truly one of the most important noise compilations of all time, and was incredible to get the story from the man
Hydra – Power
Hydra is an absolute favorite project of Noisextra and we felt is was a fine time to explore "Power." We dive into this classic tape on Bloodlust! from 1996 and are filled with every emotion throughout the discussion of this cassette. The world lost Greg Scott in 2003, but he forever lives on in this and all his releases. All you need is force.
Cock E.S.P. – Greatest Dicks
We start off 2023 discussing some very serious noise artists with Cock E.S.P. "Greatest Dicks"” from 1996 on the one and only Pure. We get appropriately foul and dirty while discussing one of the most seminal, deep thinking and intelligent noise bands of all time. Cock E.S.P. mean it this time and they are definitely making it their business. Happy New Cock Noise Year!
In Conversation with Anthony Di Franco
Sometimes interviews slip through the cracks. Anthony DiFranco (Ramleh, JFK, Skullflower, more) joined us in the distant past and today our talk has be found and is transmitting to the world. Coil “Winter Solstice”
Today is the Winter Solstice and the most appropriate recording we could think of was Coil "Winter Solstice" EP. The final four songs in the Solstice series, this is the perfect way to ring in the holidays, especially with the stunning beauty of the final track. It’s our first episode on Coil, and rather than going with one of their full lengths, it was nice to take our first steps in the form of this EP, as there will certainly be more Coil as the years go on. Feel the moon’s pull… Christmas is

Lon and Skott of legendary American industrial band Hunting Lodge join us for an in-depth discussion covering their entire output. 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of Hunting Lodge, and with multiple reissues of theirs rare release in the past handful of years, there’s no time like now to hear the history direct from the source. Merzbow & Christoph Heeman – Sleeper Awakes on the Edge of the Abyss
A collaboration that has come up on two recent Seven Inch Sundays, and one that was requested multiple times in our early podcast days, Merzbow & Christoph Heemann "Sleeper Awakes on the Edge of Abyss" is this week’s focus. An interesting and unexpected work, this album settles in quickly and brings up as many images as it does questions. It’s a great look at '80s Merzbow through the lens of Christoph Heemann.
Killer Bug – Brutal Rainbow
A pure 90s noise tape was called for, and Killer Bug "Brutal Rainbow" answered that call. On the Noise label from Taiwan, this one tears the ground asunder. Killer Bug is the first incarnation of Kazumoto Endo, and while the cut up technique is present, "Brutal Rainbow" goes heavy on the trash, the porn, and the total noise.

Atrax Morgue feat. Morder Machine – DeathShow
Our yearly Marco Corbelli episode has arrived and this time we went for something a little different — Morder Machine “DeathShow.” A project that existed directly alongside Atrax Morgue, Morder Machine utilized a bit more structure and rhythm without losing any darkness and obsession. We pull quotes directly about Morder Machine and relay Marco’s thoughts on the project. Additionally, we continue our tradition of choosing three Italian horror movies to highlight before discussing the album. Welc

Inquiries concerning running a label, favorite releases, show memories and more. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Chop Shop – Steel Plate
Break the metal mold with Chop Shop "Steel Plate." A heavy release in every sense, we explore the sonic sculptures of Scott Konzelmann. Two 10"s and a booklet strapped to a sheet of metal, this is one of the great 90s noise packages. Listen and witness physical sounds through visible sources
MSBR – Destructive Locomotion
A new year should only begin with a classic and that’s what we had searing through the speakers with MSBR "Destructive Locomotion (Dedicated to Chizuo Matsumoto)" on Pure. Chizuo Matsumoto was known to the world as Shoko Asahara, the leader of Aum Shinrikyo. This is a noise/true crime episode, in the vein our Murder Series episodes, as we dig into this incredible album as a background to the story of Aum Shinrikyo and Tokyo sarin subway attacks.
Trashware: Mike Connelly
You knew it had to happen sometime. That time is now. Greh cornered Mike and asked him all sorts of stuff. Guitar? Check. Death Metal pedal? Check. Air organ? Check. Vocals? Check. And of course we talk his latest evolution of Failing Lights, working with Tara in Yellow Gas Flames, how Clay Rendering has influenced his solo work, and what it's like to operate the Los Angeles Serial Killer Synthesizer Club.
Kallabris – s/t
Papa Noel crosses our doorstep in the form of the self-titled Kallabris LP. Whip up a holiday cocktail and trudge through the snow to witness the darkly tense strings and low noise being performed in rooms beyond your reach.
2021 Year End Wrap-Up
2021 is coming to a close, so it’s time to get into some of our favorite releases of the year. This go around we decided to have a general discussion of our faves rather than a "list." Here’s to a great year in noise as we look forward to 2022. Noise for life, noise 'til death.
KK Null – Saishiyu Bushitsu
KK Null’s "Saishiyu Butshitsu" LP from 1985 was recommended to us and we were all blown away. Brand new to us, this album hits all the right notes. In the moment physical brutality brings us to many different spaces in our brain. KK Null has a widely varied discography, but this LP sits firmly in the land of pure noise. A new favorite for Noisextra.
In Conversation with Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions
We were delighted to have Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions join us for a fascinating discussion. To celebrate the release of the new book "Electronic Resistance", Nigel took us back to the early days of industrial culture through the lens of Nocturnal Emissions. We get into working with MB and SPK, early mail art contacts, and how NE’s approach evolved throughout the years. Another mandatory history lesson is now in session.
Netzach – Force and Fire
Greh introduces the Connellys to an old obscure favorite of his with Netzach "Force and Fire." Loop based industrial from 1993, this tape hit all the right notes and got the entire crew revved up. Tara dove into researching the Crowley and Kabbalisitc references on the release and fill us in on her findings. This is an exciting early 90s industrial artifact prime for (re-)discovery.
In Conversation with John Wiese
John Wiese was in town so it was a perfect time to sit down and have a chat. We focus on Wiese’s love of the 7” format but of course we get into many aspects of John’s work, from his early days in California to Sissy Spacek’s upcoming tour with Blood Incantation. Boil sound down to its essence and give all your attention as the 7” spins.
MO*TE – Taste Die Mad
Let waves of noise lead you to new lands with Mo*te "Taste Die Mad" on Spite from 1998. A great free flowing noise tape, Mo*te drops us into deep waters and we aren’t in any hurry to reach the surface. Let this be the soundtrack to the crumbling world.
Macronympha – Intensive Care
Macronympha deliver one of the definitive American Noise albums with “Intensive Care” on Self Abuse from 1998. We received a letter from Joe Roemer and relay info on the album and Macronympha directly from the source. Primal sound steamrolls the status quo world. Blow out every little sound and submit to total noise.
Atrax Morgue – Black Slaughter
Our annual Atrax Morgue episode has arrived, and this time we take a look at "Black Slaughter." A different type of release than covered on our previous Atrax episodes, here Marco Corbelli utilizes samples instead of vocals to convey the thoughts of a psychopathic mind. Included in "Black Slaughter" is an insert with notes on each track by Marco himself, and we read his words throughout. We are ready. Marco Corbelli forever.
In Conversation with Old Tower
All Hallows' Eve approaches and the Specter rises to let us into the shadow kingdom of Old Tower. We had an enchanting discussion on his process and philosophy, going from Old Tower’s beginnings to the new album “The Old King of Witches.” Build a twilight world and tear apart the fabric of reality. Let the cauldron spill over.
In Conversation with Mortiis
Mortiis is one of the most singular and transcendental electronic artists of the past 30 years and it was an absolute honor for us all to get a chance to speak with him. What transpired was a riveting discussion on the entire body of work left by Mortiis, Vond and beyond. We get into his relationship with Cold Meat Industry, working with Merzbow, his early electronic music influences, and so much more. Join us and we wander through castle ruins and crooked paths with Mortiis.
Slaughter Productions
We will never get enough of Slaughter Productions, so we decided to take a look at 3 individual cassettes released by the label: Stratvm Terror "The Only True Septic Whore," Slogun "A Breed Apart," and Contagious Orgasm "Defective Merchandise." All 3 tapes represent different countries and styles that highlight the curation of Slaughter. We add a cassette compilation - "Slaughter Age 95" - on the Extra Noisextra for our patrons, showcasing Marco’s knack for putting together outstanding comps.
In Conversation with Chad Davis of Subklinik
October has crept in, and we begin the month by speaking with Subklinik, aka Chad Davis. Subklinik has been wandering the landscapes of death industrial for over two decades and let us in to his world and process. We get into his early days, working with Marco Corbelli, his relationship with death, and much more in this captivating discussion.
Complete Works of Jonathan Briley (with guest Kyle Wright)
Kyle Wright returns to discuss the fantastic Jonathan Briley box set that Kyle released on his Diophantine Discs label. He also gets into putting together the box itself and more behind this important collection of '80s industrial cassette culture.Get your own boxset at diophantine.netFollow us on Instagram: @noisextraFollow us on Twitter: @noisextraaaSupport us on Patreon: patreon.com/
The Haters – Drunk on Decay (with Justin Lakes)
Penetrate the void with The Haters "Drunk on Decay." Justin Lakes joins us to erode this classic CD from 1997. It was one of the most widely available Haters albums at the time and its impact is still felt today. GX provided us with some background info on this album as well as other "Drunk on Decay" performances. De-cay is good-cay!
P. Children – PCH 4
background and filters it through the early 90s world of RRR and SSS. Bang on an oxygen tank and slide your fingers along piano strings. Penderecki's Children indeed.
Yen Pox “Blood Music”
Crimson and viscous, Yen Pox "Blood Music" flows into our veins. This 1995 album is an absolute classic in the world of dark ambient, and the twilight territory it places us in is intoxicating. Blot out the sun and cover the world in "Blood Music."
Prick Decay – Mud Sound for Car Stereos (with guest Anthony Saunders)
We return to the Pure series to cover Prick Decay’s "Mud Sound for Car Stereos" as recommended by guest Anthony Saunders. Fitting perfectly in the realm of mid '90s RRR sound, we all wallow in the tape hiss and crudeness provided Prick Decay. In addition, Dylan Nyoukis provided some background info on this CD. How will your milk taste?
La Sonorite Jaune – Heliae (with guest Shane English)
Shane English (Corporate Park, K & S, L.I.E.S. Records) brought a very obscure 80s French industrial cassette to us with La Sonorite Jaune "Heliae" on their own SJ Organisation label. Shane has communicated with Pascal of LSJ and relays some background info on "Heliae." We were all excited to be introduced to this tape and project thanks to Shane's deep knowledge of 80's Euro cassette culture.Follow us on Instagram: @noisextraFollow us on Twitter: @noisextraaaSupport us on Patreon: patreon.com/n
Hands To – Decesh (with guest Stefan Aune)
Stefan Aune joins us to discuss Hands To "Decesh" tape from 1988. Stefan has been working with Jeph Jerman, the man behind Hands To, and brings some great behind the scenes knowledge for this fantastic artifact from 80s cassette culture. Play this episode through your body and note the results.
Grim – Folk Music
Enter a place of mystery with Grim's "Folk Music" album from 1986. There's really no other album like it, and we get wrapped up in its blend of austerity, violence, and pure vision. We go from places of worship to rooms filled with oil drums to the Alps and many more places in between. Throw out all expectations and embrace the world of Grim.
Pita – Get Out (with guest Carlos Giffoni)
Carlos Giffoni joins us to pay tribute to Peter Rehberg, who we lost on July 23, 2021. Carlos worked with Peter and brought him to the US for the first No Fun Fest, helping to introduce many stateside noise supporters to the world of Mego. We discuss Pita’s classic album "Get Out," as well as share stories of Peter Rehberg. His loss will be felt for ages, but his music, and the music he released, will forever live on. Matt Purse (Oxen, Unsustainable Social Condition) brought us a major noise LP to discuss — the first Hanatarash album on Alchemy. Matt’s love and knowledge of Hanatarash and all of Eye’s work is evident and incredibly exciting. Throw out any regard for your safety, fire up the bulldozer, and plow into this legendary band and album.
Kingdom of Noise: Japanese Noise Selection
An absolute classic VHS called for our first in-person episode in a long time as we all got together to watch "Kingdom of Noise: Japanese Noise Selection." Truly mandatory viewing for everyone, it was great to revisit as these clips were some of the first noise visuals we saw back in the 90s. This tape is a perfect showcase of the breadth of Japanese noise featuring Masonna, Merzbow, Seed Mouth, Incapacitants, and much more. A mandatory look into extreme history.
Ferial Confine – The Full Use of Nothing
The junk orchestra is tuning up as we sift through debris with Ferial Confine "The Full Use of Nothing." Squeals becomes notes, layers become voices, and chaos becomes ambient. An inspiring chunk of 1980s UK noise, this album leads us out of the mundane into the nothingness of total sound.
Hermit & Thirdorgan – Dead-Tech Machine Gallery
A CD as great as it is unexpected, Hermit /Thirdorgan "Dead Tech Machine Gallery" delivers a magnificent glimpse into the possibilities of 90s noise. Hermit’s garbage fi mixes with Thirdorgan’s utter harshness to generate a fascinating album. Part individual, part collab, part live…all personality. The spirit of worldwide DIY underground is alive.
Vromb – Perimetre 3+10
A multi format release closes doors that can never open with Vromb's "Perimetre 3+10" on Ant-Zen. The rhythmic noise hypnosis of this release connects us all to event horizons. Tara attempts translate and dissect the French vocals and discovers a conceptual theme imbedded in this great late '90s black hole.
Kiyoshi Mizutani – Bird Songs
In our first episode on a Ground Fault Series 1 CD, we bring nature inside with Kiyoshi Mizutani’s "Bird Songs." Tara supplies the info on some of the specific birds heard on this album, and we all get lost in a sea of trees. Let the natural world lay down the atmosphere in your unnatural surroundings.
Maschinenzimmer 412 (aka MZ.412) – Malfeitor
Darkness descends on the podcast as we discuss MZ.412 "Malfeitor." We are thrilled as Nordvargr himself lent his voice to this episode and gave us insight not only into this album, but the project as it was in the late 80s. Crowbar your way into the engine room and stare into the abyss.
Lille Roger – For Life
Before there was Brighter Death Now there was Lille Roger, and we head back to 1985 to discuss his “For Life” cassette. It is a wonderful soundtrack to counteract the monotonous hopelessness of the mundane, as Tara attests to in this episode. Listen and raise the undead.
Fennesz – Endless Summer
June is calling so we thought it would be a great time to cover "Endless Summer" by Fennesz. It’s our first time highlighting a Mego album and this seminal disc is a fantastic marker of a particular branch of noise sounds. Melodic guitar swims under broken computer sounds and we are washed away in its waves. Note: apologies for some mic crackle and distortion on this episode.
Anenzephalia – Ephemeral Dawn
A morbid industrial classic haunts new buildings in the bleak form of "Ephemeral Dawn" by Anenzephalia. We take a look at this slow and tense mid-90s document that gives the same necrotic chills today as it did then. Here the dream dies!
Seed Mouth – Titanic
We travel back to a fateful night in 1912 with Seed Mouth’s astounding "Titanic" CD from 1996. An incredibly unique and special Japanese project, Seed Mouth brings something ineffable to the noise landscape. In addition, we discuss the Titanic disaster and how we see it relating to the expanse of this album.
IRM – Oedipus Dethroned
The story of Oedipus is reimagined by IRM on the "Oedipus Dethroned" CD on Cold Meat Industry from the turn of the century. This is a power electronics concept album that utilizes classical symbols and icons to create something beyond its parts. The stage is set and the mannequin is on the table ready for the surgeon.
P16.D4 – Acrid Acme (of) P16.D4 (with guest Howard Stelzer)
Did Howard Stelzer break the Noisextra crew with "The Acrid Acme (of)" P16.D4? Stelzer brought us this unclassifiable CD from 1989 to explore. This album has been with him since it’s release, and Howard’s knowledge and relationship with this seminal German project is infectious. We also get into Stelzer’s discovery of noise while living in Florida in the late 80s/early 90s.
Merzbow – Red 2 Eyes
We are back in Merzland with the fantastically bright "Red 2 Eyes" 10" on V2. These thick, heavy, and cosmic sounds were recorded in February and August of 1995 and we get to hear Merzbow experimenting with his then-recently acquired EMS synth. As well as the history of this record and title, there is a fun-filled debate on what to call the colors of the cover and vinyl. This 10" showcases how and why Merzbow hits in a way no one else quite can.
In Conversation with Joel St. Germain (Spite & Humectant Interruption)
Joel St. Germain, the elusive owner of Spite and the man behind Humectant Interruption, gives us a glimpse into his fascinating personal experience of running a 90s noise label. We talk about assembling tapes with pancakes and pig snouts, getting into noise at the age of 15, and if Greh’s driving lessons stuck. Another noise history class is in session; no hall passes will be issued.
Caroline K – Now Wait For Last Year
Enter a world of artificial time and nature with "Now Wait for Last Year" by Caroline K. As a member of Nocturnal Emissions, Caroline helped craft a strain of early industrial, but by the time her only solo album was released, a new landscape of sound emerged. This is a very special and singular album from 1987, and we all get swept away by its scope.
Z’EV – An Uns Momento (with Blake Edwards)
Blake Edwards (Vertonen, Crippled Intellect Productions, Ballast NVP) delivers the heavy knowledge on one of industrial culture’s originators by bringing Z'EV "An Uns Memonto" CD for us to explore. Blake worked directly with Z'V to release this obscure material, and he relays the process of putting it together as well as his continuing work with Z'EV up to Z'EV's unfortunate passing. Set your CD players to "random" and see what happens.
In Conversation with Dan Greenwood (Proof of the Shooting / Diagram: A)
With the release of the Proof of the Shooting box set out now on Self Abuse/Fusty Cunt, we thought it’d be a perfect time to have a conversation with Dan Greenwood, one half of Proof of the Shooting and the man behind the long running Diagram: A. Dan digs back into memories of special packaging assembly, discovering noise in the 90s, recording onto VHS tape and so much more.
Knurl – Nervescrap
The Pure series strikes again with Knurl "Nervescrap." To-the-point noise from north of the border courtesy of this long running project. Get trashy, get junky, and tear metal to shreds. Will you make it across the border? Cranking this CD will certainly help.
TAC – If It Fits… (with guest Chris Sienko)
Chris Sienko, our most guested guest, returns and brings the deep knowledge on TAC “If it Fits” on Spite. While all being big fans of Spite, none of us were quite familiar with TAC, and Sienko rectifies that with a heap of thoughts and info on this fairly obscure project from the golden era. In addition, Chris breaks down some of his favorite Spite releases.

From a site specific performance to videos to live concert footage, "Halber Mensch" perfectly showcases the deconstructed world of Einsturzende Neubauten.
K2 “Anybody Can’t Catch Up With This”
Ten inches of rusted metal junks eclipse all light with K2 "Anybody Can’t Catch Up With This" on Ant Zen. The material on this record is based on the classic album "The Rust," so we compare both releases and discuss why 10"s are such a great format for noise. Additionally, Tara teaches us about the actual mountain K2.
Bad Sector – Polonoid (with Kyle Wright)
Kyle Wright (Diophantine Discs/Dysthymia) joins us for a conversation on the album he always tests a new stereo with—Bad Sector "Polonoid." While we were all familiar with Bad Sector, this album was new to us and we can’t thank Kyle enough for bringing it to the table. We careen to the cosmos, burrow into broken computer technology, and immerse ourselves in this unique beast from the late 90s.Check out the Bad Sector BandcampFollow us on Instagram: @noisextraFollow us on Twitter: @noisextraaaSup
Maeror Tri – Language of Flames and Sound
As we’ve discussed many Drone Records 7"s on Seven Inch Sunday, we thought it’d be a good time to cover the label’s flagship band Maeror Tri and their "Language of Flames and Sound" CD on Old Europa Cafe. Your brain waves may wash ashore on new lands, but the unfamiliar surroundings will prove rewarding. Blur the hemispheres.
Sickness – I Have Become the Disease That Made Me
Everyone is breaking their own rules as we dissect Sickness’ “I Have Become the Disease That Made Me” (2002). Join us, as we piece together an audio documentary exploring the precision, nuance, and exc

Our deepest, noisiest THANK YOU to all of our listeners this year...we have only just begun.

Dead Body Love – Maximum Dose
The Pure series enters our ears again in the harshest way possible with Dead Body Love “Maximum Dose.” Mike attempts to turn it down, Tara scolds Mike and won’t let him, and Greh runs his girlfriend out of the room. These are all proper reactions to this slice of 90s Italian noise, courtesy of the most important series in noise.

The ancient world is alive as we discuss "Missing Volume" by the seminal and mysterious Japanese project S·Core. Explore the darkness of the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands and be consumed by the veil of Nightmarish.
Government Alpha – Sporadic Spectra
Somehow we had not yet covered a Ground Fault CD, so we rectify that with a wallop of a disc in the form of Government Alpha “Sporadic Spectra.” Pure Japanese harsh noise oozes from our speakers, sends us to science fiction futures, and cures Tara’s headache. Heed the opening warning signal and enter the harsh world of Government Alpha.
In Conversation with Scott Arford (Radiosonde)

Fade into its haunted essence and discover new ways for sound to ignite fires.
In Conversation with Joe Colley (Crawl Unit)
Whether under the Crawl Unit moniker or his own name, Joe Colley has created his own unique strain of noise since the late '80s. We were elated to have Colley join us for an in depth conversation about his work—both sonically and visually—his early experimentation, and the feeling of the boundary-free era of '90s noise. Let the speakers crack and the floorboards creek.

Time to sharpen your pencils like a knife in a giallo; another noise history lesson is in session.

Tangerine Dream – Zeit
As nearly every classic Japanese noise artist has sited Tangerine Dream as a huge influence, we thought it was time to cover them and their “Zeit” double album from 1972. One of the very first full on experimental ambient records, “Zeit” sends us all on an abstract sonic path while we dig up the roots of what makes up everyone from Aube to Merzbow to Nord and countless other noise legends. Touch the haunting heavens with this masterpiece of experimental art.
Nord – Electronic Initiation
Are we in the cosmos? Underwater? The jungle? It’s possible we are in all three at the same time with Nord “Electronic Initiation.” Nord is one of the earliest Japanese noise projects, and this brain buster of a CD came almost 20 years into Nord’s existence. Midway through the episode, we got messages from Kimihide Kusafuka, aka K2, aka owner of Kinky Musik Institute, the label that put this CD out. Kusafuka gave us some behind the scenes info on “Electronic Initiation” including one bit of info
Various Artists – Sounds of New Music (with guest Aaron Dilloway)
Aaron Dilloway takes us on a time traveling journey, as far back as the 1920s, to get into some of the earliest roots of experimental music with “Sounds of New Music” on the legendary Folkways Records. This compilation features works from avant garde composers like John Cage and Edgar Varese, as well as some strange instructional tracks and other primitive sonic experiments. Hear the sounds of the distant past and understand the sounds of the future.
Solmania – Trembling Tongues
Shredding down the sun-drenched modified noise guitar highway we go with Solmania’s “Trembling Tongues.” A very unique Japanese noise project, Solmania delivers some psychedelic overdrive noise. We go through an interview with Masahiko Ohno from Bananafish #9 and and get into his own noise world. Greh pronounces Solmania one way, Tara pronounces it another way, and Mike bounces between the two, which is only fitting when discussing this wild CD of noise madness.
Jeff Greinke – Cities in Fog (with guest Pete Swanson)
Pete Swanson joins us to melt icebergs and flood alleyways with “Cities in Fog” by Jeff Greinke. Swanson recommended this strange '80s muted atmospheric haze for us to cover and we couldn’t have been happier to swim in this watery abyss. Pete brings his deep knowledge of obscure experimental scenes and sounds as we discuss where this album comes from and where it takes us. Let the dark tides roll in.
DMDN – Agonistes 1 & 2
In our first journey to the Netherlands, we encounter the fantastic DMDN “Agonistes 1&2” cassette on G.R.O.S.S. and fall headfirst into its grinding swirl. Sjak Van Bussell, the man that is DMDN, gave us some incredible information behind this tape. He also filled us in on other aspects of his work, including his band THU20, his label Midas Music, and his time touring with Merzbow and the Haters in 1989. Celebrate noise.
Robert Ashley – The Wolfman (with guest Chris Sienko)
Through the advent of teleportation technology, Chris Sienko returns to Noisextra and we all go the farthest back in time yet with Robert Ashley’s “The Wolfman.” Sienko lays down some serious information. “The Wolfman” is an absolute precursor to noise as we know it, and we dig our claws into this destructive piece of sound as well as Ashley’s work in the 1980s. Noise history lesson is in session.
Rend – Proberta Gerber
It is time for another entry in the Pure series as we dig into one of the more obscure titles under the Pure banner in the form of Rend “Proberta Gerber.” We were able to get in touch with Sean, the man behind Rend, and he provided us with some great information not only on this CD, but also on his work with the Plague in Perspective label. No time like now to dig deep and get washed away by Rend.
SPK – Information Overload Unit (with guest Jonathan Canady)
Jonathan Canady of Deathpile, Dead World, Blunt Force Trauma and so much more joins us to discuss a milestone in the world of noise and industrial—“Information Overload Unit” by SPK. Jonathan came prepared to go deep on all aspects of this album. In addition, we talk about Jonathan’s time working for Relapse as well as his early days of sound making. The overload has begun.
In Conversation with Chris Sienko (As Loud As Possible)
We are joined again by Chris Sienko to discuss his time in the trenches as one of the people behind As Loud As Possible magazine. Chris details how the issue came together, why there were no more issues, and stories of articles and interviews he was a part of, both published and unpublished. A fascinating look at what it takes to put together a magazine of this size and scope.
Gruntsplatter – Pest Maiden
Noise ambient plague sounds take hold as we discuss Gruntsplatter’s “Pest Maiden” from 1999 on Troniks. “Pest Maiden” exists in 3 forms, a two song 7”, a limited cassette, and a CD which features the complete picture. We go deep into the CD and it’s many references to the plague. Rounding out this episode, not only did we talk with Scott Candey, the man behind Gruntsplatter, but we also interviewed Jonathan Canady (Deathpile, Blunt Force Trauma) and Phil Blankenship (Troniks, The Cherry Point) t
Contagious Orgasm – Confession of Mannequin
We head back to the 1980s and get completely knocked out by Contagious Orgasm’s “Confession of Mannequin” on SSSM. An incredibly unique band in the noise/industrial/experimental underground, Contagious Orgasm’s second release is gives us a lot of sounds and images that will continue throughout their decades of work. Not only is the tape a stunner, the packaging is a true '80s cassette culture artifact. Join us and walk through the surreal world of sound created by Contagious Orgasm.
Bacillus – Epidemic
We go into the world of microbiology and old school noise with Bacillus’s “Epidemic” cassette from 1995 on his own Clotted Meat Portioning label. Viruses, pandemics, diseases and short bursts of pure noise all rear their head in our discussion. We also spoke with Peter Keller of Bacillus through the safety of technology. True '90s American noise.
Trashware 02: Circuit Wound
For the second entry in our Trashware series Jay Howard of Circuit Wound joins us to discuss noise gear. Jay came from a death metal background and began his noise creation already armed with essential weapons without even realizing it. We get into studio set ups, preferred pedals, sound sources and more. Get out your pen and paper and take notes on this noise gear class.
RRR Taste Test Series
Chris Sienko wowed us with the unknown-to-us RRR Taste Test tape series. In the early 90s, RRR made sampler tapes of items in the RRR catalog. They look amazing. They sound amazing. They are amazing. The tapes send us into a discussion of our early noise explorations, including shows at the Fireside Bowl and the mystery of discovering noise in the 90s.
Thirdorgan – Pessimistic Cyborg (with guest Jay Howard)
We were thrilled to have our guest Jay Howard of Circuit Wound bring his copy of Thirdorgan "Pessimistic Cyborg" to the Noisextra studio and proceed to shred our mechanical insides. The whole crew is left numb and dazed, but wanting more. We also dug up a very rare interview with Akihiro Shimizu and relay some of what he had to say. So ahead of the curve, there is no better time to dive head first into Thirdorgan.
Emil Beaulieau – Anti-Performance (with guest Chris Sienko)
We are joined by Chris Sienko of As Loud As Possible magazine to discuss the legendary Emil Beaulieau "Anti Performance" cassette from 1991. After having been mentioned on nearly every Noisextra episode, we finally devote an entire episode to the "greatest living noise artist." Chris dug in extensively to which anti-record is being played when as well as the history behind each record. We also discuss visiting RRR, and all try our own versions of Beaulieau’s dance moves. Straighten your tie, sha

Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock – Asshole / Snail Dilemma (with guest Ryan Martin)
We are joined by Ryan Martin of Dais Records, Robert & Leopold & Copley Medal to discuss Runzelstirn & Gurgelstøck’s “Asshole/Snail Dilemma.” Ryan is writing a book on R&G and the entire Schimpfluch Gruppe, so we couldn’t have had a better person to dig into this album. We cover the early days as well as the era that this CD is a part of. Pull up a plate of spaghetti and wash your brains with Runzelstirn & Gurgelstøck.
Con-Dom – The Eighth Pillar
The time has come for us to take on one of the greatest works of the 20th century, Con-Dom’s “The Eighth Pillar : A Confession Of Faith.” We dive deep, not only into the album and the work of Mike Dando, but also into the life of the man that inspired the album, T.E. Lawrence, as well as his monumental book “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom.” Let us walk in the way of insight.
GX & PAINJERK – Reference Desk
Friend of the podcast G.X. Jupitter-Larsen is making a new movie called “Reference Desk” and has started a fundraiser to get it made. One of the perks is this brand new collaboration tape between GX and PAINJERK. Do you like the sounds of pumps, book pages and electronic stabs? Of course you do. Head over to igg.me/at/rdesk to support the movie and grab this cassette—the first cassette on Noiseoploy.
Manon Anne Gillis – Euragine (with guest G.X. Jupitter-Larsen)
G.X. Jupitter-Larsen returns for a third time to discuss the work of Manon Anne Gillis, and specifically her album “Euragine.” He gives insight to her art and performances, as well as his collaboration with her. We are all thrilled to walk around in the sonic world that Anne Gillis creates. The
Murder Corporation – New Crimes
We’re back in Pure-land and back in Italy for Murder Corporation’s “New Crimes” CD. Culled from an insanely limited 8 tape box set, the CD represents a perfectly distilled version of a staggering piece of work. Moreno Daldosso, the man behind Murder Corporation, was kind enough to answers some questions that we sent him, and we relay his answers throughout the episode. Open the vents and let the death wind in.
Lull – Cold Summer (with guest David Reed)
David Reed of Envenomist joins is to discuss “Cold Summer” by Mick Harris’s void ambient project Lull. We go many places with this hauntingly staggering album, from the artificial jungle to the sanctum just out of reach. David also discusses some of his recent work, as well as his early days getting into noise. Find your isolation shelter and fall slowly into Lull.
In Conversation with Andy Bolus
We couldn’t have been more excited to sit down with Andy Bolus aka Evil Moisture. Andy has been going strong since 1990 and we cover a lot about his early days and early releases. We also touch on what dreams are to us, as well as Greh’s fantastic cocktails. Another noise history lesson is in session.

Mlehst / Brume – Unusual Methods 7″
Today we bring you one of our favorite episodes, culled from the Noisextra Patreon. You can see how we do it over there, and hear the Noisextra crew get terrified with this stand out split 7” from Mlehst/Brume on Bandaged Hand Produce. Richard Chase, walking into the wrong house, favorite vampire movies, and sleep masks are all part of the discussion of this truly dark 7”. We've got something in store for later this week, so keep your ears peeled.

Fatal Impact – Satan For Ever
This week we wander into cathedral ritual practices with Fatal Impact’s “Satan For Ever” cassette from 1991. We get deep with warped organ, chanting layers and lactating statues. A true cassette artifact that is begging to be played at your next ceremony. Satan For Ever.
In Conversation with Seymour Glass (Bananafish)
We are starting 2020 with a very special interview with Seymour Glass of Bananafish Magazine, Glands of External Secretion and Bren’t Lewiis Ensemble. We discuss the history of Bananafish and Seymour’s time in the noise trenches. He gives us anecdotes of interviews, people he worked with, and the process of putting an issue together. Another noise history lesson is in session. Tardiness will not be excused.

HOMETIME: Christmas Eve Special
Merry Christmas Eve with special bonus episode of the Connellys’ Hometime series. Normally a weekly Patreon-only series, Mike and Tara wanted to spend their favorite holiday with the entire Noisextra family. Sit by the Yuletide fire as they discuss their favorite Christmas themed noise, horror movies, and the spirit of Christmas.
In Conversation with Moonbeam Terror
Our second interview from the Hospital Fest weekend is with Jilla of Moonbeam Terror and Autoerotichrist. The discussion goes deep when talking about her music and art and pivots to hilarity when talking about beans and Wisconsin. Her album "Comfort Knife" was one of our favorites of the year and her set at Hospital Fest was visceral magic. Put on your chain mail and watch out for sharp corners.
In Conversation with Smell & Quim
It was an honor to talk with one of our favorite bands, Smell & Quim. A great history lesson, we go from off the wall Quim-ness to earnest chats about the early days, costumes throughout time and baking bread. Hear Tara predict the props used the following night. Head Dave describe what "the English Method" is. Hear a great talk with one of the all-time legends. And remember, "life's too short not to bake your own bread."
PAINJERK – Mission Invisible: Kill the Poor
Surprise! We are back a day before the Hospital Fest with a very special bonus episode. Did you know there was an unreleased Painjerk album from the '90s? Neither did we, but here it is! Easily the most exciting noise release of 2019, Painjerk’s “Mission Invisible : Kill the Poor” on Hospital Productions is here to scorch the earth and begin anew. Spoiler alert: we absolutely worship this album. In addition, Kohei Gomi sent us some great information on this unreleased masterpiece that we share t
Year End Wrap-up
As the the first year of Noisextra winds down, we thought we’d discuss some of our favorite albums and sets of the year. It’s been an excellent year for noise and it was hard to whittle our lists down, but each of us came with our personal stand outs of 2019. We cannot wait for many more years of noise listening and noise talking. Thank you all for listening, to us and to noise.
Daniel Menche – Field of Skin
Skies are blackening as we sit down to discuss Daniel Menche’s “Field of Skin.” Sandstorms, pools of mercury and 1800s apocalypse scenes all cross our path while we wander through the field of skin. Head on into the grain silo with us and this magnificent album.
Deathpile – Ne Plus Ultra
Time for another album in the Pure series, and this one is thick and heavy. Deathpile’s “Ne Plus Ultra” sends us inside ourselves as we explore the heart and blood of this monumental CD. We talked to Jonathan Canady and relay what he had to say about this album as well as the beginnings of Deathpile.
Masonna – Astro Harshtronism EP
We are celebrating Masonna’s birthday with a bonus episode on the man from whom we took our podcast name. We shred our ears with the “Astro Harshtronism” 8” on Anti Music. Thank you for all the noise.

Atrax Morgue – Paranoia
It’s our Halloween episode and we thought there was no one more appropriate to cover than Atrax Morgue. We listen to and discuss his “Paranoia” CD on Old Europa Cafe. We cover death, obsession and the darkness that Marco Corbelli infused into every moment of his recordings. In lieu of recent listening, we talk about some of our favorite Italian Giallo movies, a genre that was highly influential for Atrax Morgue. Slip on some black gloves and sharpen your knife’s blade.

As October rolls on, we dive into the black leather night dungeon with Master/Slave Relationship’s “This Lubricious Love” on RRR from 1987, chosen by our guest Jim Haynes. Things get unhygienic as we discuss Debbie Jaffe’s intense personal vision, both lyrically and musically. In addition, we have a thick recent listening segment as well as mentions of “Blue Velvet,” infrasound performance, mix tapes and Nitro. Dig your heels in.
Aghast – Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis
It’s October and time to stray a bit off the noise path onto a road filled with fog, fire and obscured ambient sounds with Aghast’s Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis, a perfect soundtrack for autumn’s chill. We wander in the forest of tape hiss, off kilter timpani and dances of death. In addition, we discuss some recent horror movie viewing, as well as some favorite horror movie series. Turn out the lights, light a candle, and descend into the ancient ambiance of Aghast.
C.C.C.C. – Love and Noise
This week we travel to the black light cosmos with C.C.C.C.’s “Love and Noise” CD from 1996. The crew gets swept up in the solar winds with no concern of return. We discuss Mayuko Hino’s legacy and unique thoughts on noise and what makes C.C.C.C. stand out from the pack. Is noise “bad taste music for maniac people” as C.C.C.C.’s Hiroshi Hasegawa says? We’d like to think so. See you on the other side. Follow us on Instagram: @noisextraFollow us on Twitter: @noisextraaaSupport us on Patreon: http:
Aube – Spindrift
This week we celebrate the life and work of Akifumi Nakajima aka Aube. We dive headfirst into “Spindrift”, the first release on his own G.R.O.S.S label. There will never be enough words to truly describe his sound and his impact, but we will always have his noise. Listen to Aube.
Voice Crack & Peter Liechti – Kick That Habit (with guest Crank Sturgeon)
Class is in session for another noise history lesson. For our first episode on a film, we sat down with Crank Sturgeon to watch and discuss Voice Crack’s “Kick That Habit” film, directed by Peter Lietchi. Topics include his introduction to, and working with, Ron Lessard, travels to the UK and playing with Smell & Quim, and the importance of '90s noise VHS.
Hijokaidan – King of Noise
We got excited and recorded another episode this week. It’s our first repeat artist as we discuss the seminal “King of Noise” album by Hijokaidan, which was recently reissued by Fantastique. Things get piercing and sharp as we celebrate this record. We also discuss the possibility of cooking a pizza on Greh’s speakers using the sounds Hijokaidan. We know who’s noise kingdom we’d want to be serfs in.
La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela & the Theater of Eternal Music – Dream House 78’17” (with guest Steve Lowenthal)
This week we sit down with talented author and VDSQ label-head Steve Lowenthal and travel the farthest back in time that we have thus far, in order to explore one of the tentacular roots of noise/experimental music with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House 78'17" LP. Steve talks about his experiences at La Monte and Marian’s Dream House in NYC, Tara talks turtles and prime numbers, Greh talks wizard bikers and Mike headbangs to sine waves. Get out your magenta lights and go deep.

Skin Crime – King of the Deathmatch
It's finally here, our first Skin Crime episode, after mentioning the project nearly every episode prior. Barbed wire, thumbtacks and fire all play a vital role in this week’s episode as we not only discuss Skin Crime’s “King of the Deathmatch” cassette, but also dig into the actual King of the Death Match and related wrestling matches. We dive onto a bed of nails, choke slam each other into thousands of thumbtacks and ascend the ladder in the middle of the ring to achieve the highest honor of b
Inade – Burning Flesh
This week we take a little sidestep into one of the many tentacles of noise as we discuss industrial dark ambient project Inade and their “Burning Flesh” cassette from 1993. We embark a meditative trip through the gates of death, hear about Greh seeing Inade live and fall into the black water well that is this fantastic tape.
Chop Shop – Discrete Emissions
Bonus mini episode time. We wanted to let everyone in on what’s going on over on our Patreon site, so we discuss Chop Shop’s “Discrete Emissions” 7” on Banned Production. This episode is also timely as Chop Shop will be making a rare live appearance at the Haters 40th anniversary in Oakland this Saturday, August 17th. We travel to a hazy past through modified speakers and sounds that just aren’t right.

Steady yourself for the electro suplex of MSBR.

The trio discuss listening to MB late at night and in the dark, waves of sound heading into oblivion, and oil spreading atmosphere. Turn on a night light and dig in.
Various – Music Should Hurt (with guest Skin Crime)
This week Greh and Mike sit down with Pat O’Neil and Mark Jameson, aka SKIN CRIME. We listened to the legendary compilation CD “Music Should Hurt” on Pat’s own Self Abuse label. We cover many classic '90s noise bands from all over the globe, what it was like to put together a comp in the pre-internet age, running a noise label in the 90s, and a ton more. This won’t hurt one little bit.
Yggdrasil / Eciton / Hermit 10″ (with guest Pierre-Marc Tremblay)
Greh and Mike sit down with Pierre-Marc Tremblay of Ames Sanglantes to discuss the Yggdrasil / Eciton / Hermit split 10"on Darkness Productions from 1997. We get into Canadian noise at the end of the '90s, the unique vision of each project, and the true spirit of the underground. DO IT YOURSELF!
Crawl Unit – Aftermusic (with guest Jim Mroz / Lussuria)
Sorry for the delay, the laptop we record and edit on ceased functioning last week. We're back up and running to bring you this episode! Jim Mroz (Lussuria) came to the studio to listen to and discuss Crawl Unit's epic 1994 Aftermusic CD, and listen we did.
Hijokaidan – Ferocity of Practical Life
One last duo session to settle into the new mode, Greh and Mike been preparing for the Hospital fest in LA and since Junko is performing solo we figured we'd pop on 1996's "Ferocity of Practical Life" 10" by noise legends Hijokaidan, one of the longest running acts around. All-star lineup this time around, with classics Jojo and Junko Hiroshige, Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai (Incapacitants) and Masami Akita! NOISE!
Richard Ramirez – Memorial
Mike and Greh got together to listen to Richard Ramirez' 1997 CD "Memorial" on the Praxis Dr. Bearmann label from Germany. It's a somber affair, dedicated to Richard's friend Kevin Ogg who passed away the year prior.
Masonna – Sonic Devil
After a much-needed break, Mike and Greh are back with a new plan, more guests and a broader range of classic NOISE to discuss. For our first week, we chose a lesser-known record by a project we both love, Sonic Devil by MASONNA. Out on Pinch-A-Loaf from 1997, this 12" rips in hard and fast.
Merzbow – I’m Proud By Rank of the Workers (with guest G.X. Jupitter-Larsen)
GX Jupitter-Larsen of the Haters came over and we listened to "Live in Khabarvosk, CCCP" which has two recordings taken from a Russian jazz festival in 1988. Discussion of the sound is dispensed with quickly and G.X. provides many anecdotes and pieces of Merzbow, Haters and noise culture history.
Merzbow – Collapse 12 Floors (with guest Peter Rehberg / Pita)
Our 12th episode and it just so happens to be Collapse 12 Floors, with guest Peter Rehberg, best known for his project PITA and the essential Editions Mego label. Peter lends some insight into the dawn of the digital era by discussing Merzbow's earliest released computer album with us. Get under a table or stand in a doorframe as we get shook.
Merzbow – Spiral Honey (with guest Philip Best)
What a treat! Philip Best (Consumer Electronics, Whitehouse, Amphetamine Sulphate, et al.) was in town and sat down with Mike and Greh to discuss the Spiral Honey CD on Work in Progress from 1996. This harsh, nasty, buzzing record is met with great elation by the three of us, Connelly makes a compliment faux pas and Philip takes some time to discuss the true benefits of our Patreon.
Merzbow – Mercurated (with guest Russell Haswell)
Russell Haswell (Consumer Electronics, Satanstornade) stopped by while in town for a show to speak with us about 1996's Mercurated on Alchemy Records. Russell gives insight about collaborating with Masami Akita, seeing him live for the first time, and the magic of Japanese-label Merzbow CDs.
Merzbow – Flare Gun (with guest Elden M)
For this strange 1994 12" from UK label short-lived Ten Bob Swerver, we had Elden M (Allegory Chapel Ltd., Avellan Cross) over for a nice loud listen. Elden talks about joining Merzbow on stage, touring Japan in the 90s and we give our take on a weird record from the classic era of Merzbow, including a B side with the Masami/Reiko/Bara power-trio!
Merzbow – Amlux (with guest Ben Collins)
We finally dip our toes in the digital realm with 2002's AMLUX, chosen by screenwriter Ben Collins (Super Dark Times). This record takes the three of us different places: Connelly gets locked inside a parking garage, Greh confesses his foolishness regarding post-2000s Merzbow, and Ben comes up with a movie pitch for Die Hard, but in Japan.
Merzbow – Door Open at 8am (with guest Jim Haras)
Mike and Greh met up with Jim Haras (Deterge, Laureate) and listened to Merzbow's 1999 jazz-sampling classic Door Open at 8am on Alien8. Be forewarned, the three of us LOVE this record and you can certainly tell (though maybe not from the photo). Fuel up the gas-guzzler and settle in for the long haul.
Merzbow – Cloud Cock OO Grand (with guest John Wiese)
With us this week is John Wiese to talk about the 1990 Merzbow CD Cloud Cock OO Grand. This marks a new era for Merzbow, the first of many CDs and the direction we'd see in the '90s. I told John about this podcast when it was just an idea, and we're happy to have him here for what is certainly not his last episode.
Merzbow – Venereology (with guest Phil Blankenship / The Cherry Point)
Only a month in, and doing Venereology already? We must be crazy. Mike and Greh talk to dream guest Phil Blankenship (of The Cherry Point, LHD and the legendary Troniks label) about a record that changed his life (and his high school yearbook photo).
Merzbow – Storage (with guest Grant Richarson / Gnawed)
Some late '80s Merzbow here, selected by Grant Richardson (GNAWED) who stopped by while on tour, and as usual I can't seem to keep Mike Connelly away from these listening sessions. Sewers, shipping containers, forklifts and orchestral composition are a few of the items on hand as we descend into the junk cavern.
Merzbow – Hybrid Noisebloom
Our third episode, we have Tara Connelly (Clay Rendering, The Haunting, The Pool at Metz) here to discuss 1997's Hybrid Noisebloom on Vinyl Communications. Mike Connelly is here as well, and we recorded this episode on Valentine's day. We get spacey and sensual, talk a bit about naked lady mudflaps and Tara shares a rather personal anecdote about Merzbow cover art and the act of love.
Merzbow – Green Wheels (with guest Bill Hutson)
I'm joined again by Mike Connelly, along with our friend Bill Hutson (Rale, Tattered Syntax, clipping.) who chose 1995's GREEN WHEELS CD+5" from Self Abuse Records to discuss. We try to pronounce the track titles, talk about why Merzbow is THE ONE, and the sterilization of "bad sounds" from noise.
Merzbow – Tauromachine
For this first episode, I speak with Mike Connelly (Clay Rendering, Failing Lights, Gods of Tundra, et al.) about a mutual favorite Merzbow record, TAUROMACHINE. Released in 1998 on Release/Relapse records, it's a landmark of harsh noise that impacted both of us heavily. Also I mention fractals.
