Joey Lewandowski and Mike Manzi

Welcome to #CageClub! Joey Lewandowski and Mike Manzi are watching all of Cage's movies, writing about them at cageclub.me, and podcasting about them. Join them on this journey! Presented by the CageClub Podcast Network.

Longlegs (2024)

Longlegs (2024)

The biggest Nicolas Cage film in years is finally here, and we're here to talk all about the summer's biggest horror film: Longlegs! First, though, we talk about Nicolas Cage discourse on Twitter, his fears surrounding AI, and how many movies he (might, possibly, could?) have left. We discuss the marketing of Longlegs and what it means that both Cage and director Osgood Perkins dedicated this movie to their moms. We talk about the movie not exactly aligning with what we expected it to be (and th

Arcadian (2024)

#CageClub is back already to talk about Arcadian, a movie that hit movie theaters for a weekend or two a bit earlier this year! We talk about the strange inspiration behind the creatures in this movie (which we find to be both creative and interesting), the intentional lack of understanding about why society seems to have crumbled, and Cage's newfound cinematic affinity for... running? Joey talks about how this (narratively) reminds him of The Last of Us Part II. We talk about what's "missing" (

Dream Scenario (2023)

After a long winter slumber, #CageClub is back with a vengeance to talk about last year's Nicolas Cage masterpiece, Dream Scenario! We praise Kristoffer Borgli and explore the real family affair both on screen and behind the scenes of this movie. We talk about how Dream Scenario shares similarities to other Cage movies, the reality and the terror of the film's dream scenes, and an all-time great monologue from Nicolas Cage. We talk about Dylan Gelula (and all of Michael Cera's ad agency), antell

Butcher’s Crossing (2023)

This has been a banner year for Nicolas Cage fans, as Butcher’s Crossing marks his sixth (!) new film of the year… so far! This is a moderately spoiler-heavy episode, so if you want to wait until you’ve seen the movie (releasing in theaters on Friday, Oct. 20 and on VOD after that) to listen, just know: it’s Cage’s best movie of the year so far. We talk about feeling re-energized for this podcast based on the success of this movie, we admire the cinematography (and the landscape of the American

The Retirement Plan (2023)

The Retirement Plan (2023)

This is turning out to be quite the prolific year for Cage -- with still more to come -- as #CageClub returns for the fifth time in 2023 to talk about The Retirement Plan! This one made its way to theaters, but did historically poorly -- and we try to explore why. This movie is Nicolas Cage's version of Nobody or John Wick -- which is exciting -- but if this is the only time he'll ever play this type of character... we wish we got more. Even though our podcast's "brand" is positivity, The Retire

Sympathy for the Devil (2023)

#CageClub returns with yet another new Nicolas Cage movie this year -- with even more to come -- in the form of Sympathy for the Devil! This movie marks the return of "Crazy Cage," which (while fun to watch) does not a good movie make. We talk about how Sympathy for the Devil is reminiscent of other (better) movies, like Collateral and A History of Violence, and its determination to add twists and turns to draw out suspense without layering in new narrative. We talk about the things we liked (an

The Flash (2023)

It's been long enough since The Flash released for us to spoil the good news: Nicolas Cage finally played Superman in a live action film! We're back with a brief episode (before two more [!] episodes later this summer) to talk about Cage's non-animated debut as the Man of Steel. (Let's never forget Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.) We talk about the frustration of having this reveal spoiled for us (and how incredible it would have been if we didn't know it was coming). We wonder who this cameo was

Joey shares his worries about the film (and whether or not they manifested), Mike offers some Universal monster history, and we discuss whether or not the movie "feels" like New Orleans. We pi

Nicolas Cage has a new movie in theaters (well, by now it's on VOD), so #CageClub is finally back to talk about The Old Way! Since the very start of this podcast, Mike has wanted Cage to star in a western. His dream finally came true... but did it live up to expectations? We talk about how Cage held up in his first "true" western, the killer mustache he's rocking, and the authentic look of the scenery and locations. We’re keeping this episode almost entirely spoiler-free, so feel free to listen before you see it… and you SHOULD see it as soon as you can, because it’s great! This year has treated Nicolas Cage fans very well so far, and the hits keep on coming with Sion Sono's Prisoners of the Ghostland! It's not clear if we'll get another Cage movie this year, but if this is our final one in 2021, we sure went out with a weird, neon-soaked bang. In this episode, we talk about the work of Sion Sono, the rules of this world (and the relatively grounded nature of all this insanity), and why Prisoners of the Ghostland may have been more interesting if its narrative focu

Many people are calling Pig "the return of Nicolas Cage," but ask any fan, any real fan, and they know he's been here for years. That said, Pig is easily his best performance since (at least) Mandy, and likely one of the finest in his career. We headed to the theater to watch Cage's latest, and we're here to talk about the quest for truffles and his search for a stolen pig. While there are far more legitimate/credible actors in Running with the Devil than you'd expect, there's far less David Lee Roth than there should be, which is quite disappointing. The good news: not only is it a new Nicolas Cage movie (which in and of itself is a wonderful thing), but it's fun as heck to watch and to talk about. Mandy rules. It's a gorgeously intense (and intensely gorgeous), drug-fueled journey through a land of madness. To join us on this adventure, we welcomed back into the fold a co-host of Monkey Club (RIP Monkey Club), Christian Larson, who last joined us for Seeking Justice. This is the point in the

#CageClub Revisited: Fire Birds (1990)

You know that expanding brain meme, where each level of consciousness relates to an even greater level of awareness? Some people think Top Gun is great, but Fire Birds is the equivalent of someone pulling a full Lucy and using 100 percent of their brain. Like Nicolas Cage in the film, Fire Birds is the greatest! Sure, it may be nothing more than shameless propaganda to encourage young boys and girls to join the military, but who cares? There are helicopters! Video games! Semi-blind periscope dri

#CageClub Revisited: National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)

National Treasure: Book of Secrets is bigger, more sprawling, and more successful than its predecessor. But is it better? We're once joined by the Hoff Bros., Kyle and Brian, to journey around the world as we kidnap the President of the United States and discover the lost city of gold beneath Mount Rushmore. Adding Ed Harris and Helen Mirren are really big additions for the franchise, but who would the franchise have added if we had ever made it to a third National Treasure movie? Who's

#CageClub Revisited: National Treasure (2004)

National Treasure is, arguably, Nicolas Cage's biggest movie of all-time. But when you're watching it for a second, third, or fourth time, how does it hold up? We brought in the Hoff Bros., Kyle and Brian, to talk about history, sexism, and stealing the Declaration of Independence. Is Riley a role model? How good or bad of a villain is Sean Bean? And why oh why won't Nicolas Cage let Diane Kruger talk? All of this -- and much more! -- on this episode of #CageClub Revisited. Note: Our #CageClub R

#CageClub Revisited: Face/Off (1997)

What is there to say about Face/Off, the biggest, boldest, and best (?) of the three movies in Cage's action trilogy, that hasn't already been said? Just like the last #CageClub Revisited episode (Leaving Las Vegas), we had to step up our game and cover one of Cage's all-time biggest films for two guests new to our podcast universe... including one who'd never seen either movie! (We fixed that in a hurry.) With nearly two and a half hours of absolute wonder -- and 10 face waterfalls -- Face/Off

#CageClub Revisited: Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

On this (and the next) episode of #CageClub Revisited, we were joined by two (!!) guests brand new to the CageClub universe, so we know we had to step our game up. We kicked things off with Leaving Las Vegas, the film Nicolas Cage won an Oscar for, and the one Elisabeth Shue was robbed of an Oscar for. (Next episode, we'll go even bigger -- both literally and figuratively -- with Face/Off, so you'll want to come back for that.) We obviously love Nicolas Cage around these parts, but there's somet

#CageClub Revisited: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance takes everything from the series' first movie, throws it out the window, then mimes pissing on it with fire. And that's why we love it. Though even this movie (which is half an hour shorter than the original) tends to drag at times, it has clear goals, frenetic action, and a style that perfect meshes with the world of Ghost Rider, all in a way that only Neveldine and Taylor can offer. Also: can you believe that Idris Elba is in this movie? For real! It m

#CageClub Revisited: Ghost Rider (2007)

In revisiting Ghost Rider, Joey and Mike spend much of the episode wishing they were watching Spirit of Vengeance instead. As per tradition, we talk about re-casting the Batman universe within the scope of the actors we cover on the network, long for a future sequel where Nicolas Cage has to go on "one last ride" as Johnny Blaze, and ridicule the least believable scene in cinematic history. #CageClub came from a place of love. In our hearts, we believed that not only was Nicolas Cage a good actor, but that he made (almost exclusively) good movies. Then, there's 211, which Joey has ranked as the worst (and his least favorite) Nicolas Cage movie of all-time. In honor of this truly horrendous movie, we welcomed Walt Hickey, who proved the endless depths of his Nicolas Cage fandom with The Five Types Of Nicolas Cage Movies, which he wrote for FiveThirtyEight's terrific Hollywood Taxono

What better way to welcome a reporter and photographer from the Bergen Record and NorthJersey.com into CageClub HQ than by showing them the 2006 classic The Wicker Man? #CageClub Revisited: Dog Eat Dog (2016)

In this episode, we once again lament our decision to watch the "lesser" Cage films, rather than re-watching classics, while also doubling down on our dedication to this project. Also, Joey realizes that this completes the trifecta of terrific Nicky Whelan/Nicolas Cage team-ups, which makes this movie an instant classic. Whether or not Looking Glass is a good movie or not is up for debate. What isn't up for debate is that it's loaded with Nicolas Cage, who seems to alternate between being mentally checked out and crazed. All we know is that in this Cage-starved climate we're in, any Cage is better than no Cage at all. On the one hand, you could argue that this movie is trying to be a combination of Psycho and Rear Window, minus all the good parts. On the other hand, in this movie, Nicolas Cage uses a dollar bill
