No Breaks Series: Ep.8 How is Rape a Big Deal for Women?
Trigger Alert! This episode references Rape and Suicide.
"How is rape such a big deal with women, when it also happens with men but they do not make a big deal out of it?"
This was a question asked at a speaking engagement by a man. The reason why I have chosen to address it on the podcast is because this question clearly shows the state of our society. And our role is to educate not just women but men too otherwise things will never change.
Also I want us all to use the correct language. Please

Ep.112 Investing in Yourself with Mwaanga Kayuma
Investing in yourself can take different forms. We are mostly familiar with the career path model of personal development. However, I have seen so many people acquire technical skills yet do not advance in their careers or start the business. I believe it's because we need to look at personal development from a wholistic view. The mind, the heart and soul are all connected. Therefore, if there is Dis Ease in one of them, it affects all of them. Whether conscious or unconsciously.

What is the mountain in your life that you have to conquer?
Often what we don't talk about is the mental, spiritual and emotional preparation for such journeys. We focus on the technical preparation and the physicality of it, however, thats just the tip of the ice berg.

Ep.109 Your Feminine Energy with Salome Phiri
A lot of people associate feminine energy with weakness. Therefore try to distance themselves from femininity. You may feel like being soft will not get what you want or being soft makes you an easy target to be mistreated or physically abused. So we take on more male characteristics and discard the feminine because we feel it does not serve us.
This conversation between Salome and Chulu digs deeper into feminine energy and how it can be of benefit to women in particular.

Shout out to the host Amanda and every single person that came out. You have set the standard pretty high. I am looking forward to the next AW Book Club meet. I w

Ep.84 The Hotelier of Marrakesh with Meryanne Loum-Martin
Let it go on the record that this is my favourite episode on the Africana Woman podcast. They say parents do not have a favourite child, that's a lie. I explain why it is my favourite right at the end. Meryanne has so much to share including:
- the story of her ancestry
- being authentic to who you are
- creating sustainable economic opportunities for African artisans
- legacy & succession
- what being the beneficiary of generational wealth did for her
- entrepreneurship
Former Parisian lawyer.

Ep.82 Why Education Is Not Changing with Tebogo Kangote III
Everything in this world has evolved except Education. Phones have changed over time. TVs have changed. Fashion has changed. Even makeup. Yet somehow Education is impervious to change, let alone improvement. Ep.73 Breaking the Cycle from Toxic Relationships with Pennylope Kapere
Childhood traumas follow us into adulthood and make us relive those moments in a loop over and over again. Ideally you should break out of the cycle by acknowledging the problem and taking intentional steps not to repeat the cycle. However, that is not the case for everyone. In part 2, Pennylope shares how her upbringing influenced the toxic romantic relationships that she allowed in herself to have in her adult life. She also talks about what she had to do to break the cycle.

Happy International Women's Day. Well every day is women's day at Africana Woman. The theme for 2022 is Gender Equity today for a Sustainable tomorrow. When I think about Gender Equity I think about women being liberated in all spaces of their lives from the work place, public spaces, their homes to their bedrooms. Often the world likes to toot its horn about equity in politics education and health. But we forget that a woman's body has been caged in so many more areas.

Ep.62 Food & Self-Discovery with Lucia Nhamo
Food is an integral part of African Culture from it's collection, to preparation, to the way that is eaten and disposed of. It is a communal act at every stage. There are customs to who gets to eat what and when what is eaten. It really is a beautiful way to bond. Lucia and Chulu explore how Food can be used as a tool for healing and self discovery.

Set yourself up for success. Before you even make the goals and think about how to execute the big project, Dr. Fatimah is asking you, "Is the project even worth it?"
Meaning are you operating on auto pilot, or are too afraid to pull the plug because the dream has changed. It could be that your dream is also too small.
If you are at a crossroads right now and have an inkling that something needs to change, this episode is for you.
We discuss:

Ep.52 Say Your African Name with Pride
What is the best way to introduce yourself. Let's start with your name. Many Africans agonise on whether to use their mother tongue name or their english name.
This has so many implications such as whether your job application is even looked at, or whether you will be discriminated against based on Tribalism.
However, an African name has power, deep meaning and symbolism. To discard the name you have been using for majority of your life just so as you can accommodate others, takes away from you

Ep.35 My Refugee Moment with Mehntay Ngwayah part 2
We pick up Mehntay's story when her family had just left Guinea for Australia after 15 years of living as refugees. At this point the family had walked for two years to safety when the war initially began. Her mother was raising 6 children and then adopted 3 more children. Over the years they had lost track of Mehntay's father.

There are Defining Moments in our lives that set the trajectory for living out our purpose. For the next few weeks we will listen to such moments. When you look back at your life you will understand that purpose is not something that is external. It is within you.

Ep.33 Choosing Freedom Over Job Security with Karette Trottman
As we wrap up this series on Bad Ass Business Women I encourage you to ask yourself: Am I choosing job security over freedom and fulfilment. Karette would tell you that the security you are holding onto so tightly is only perceived. When the job you have is actually contributing to the deterioration of your mental, emotional and physical health you might want to revisit why you are still there.
Another little note is we need to break down the hierarchy of professions. We are under the impression

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all our men listeners. This conversation has an interesting segment about the gap in the social education of young men.
As women we tend to want to save the world, but we do it for free and sometimes to our own peril. However, have you ever considered that you can solve social problems and make money at the same time. That is the definition of Social Entrepreneurship. Our colonisers gave us the non-governmental organisation model and created a dependency on charity. We act

This means that in your group of three friends at least one of you is likely to experience primary or secondary infertility. AND YET WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT IT. We shun childless women. We label them. As we continue to speak to young African women, I thought it pertinent to talk about how communication plays out in African homes from the perspective of younger people in a household. Even though her mother is a medical doctor she did not know how to help Lengwe.

Ep.21 When your Body is Misunderstood with Timi Aluko
For the next few weeks, we shall have a series where we amplify the voices of young women. They too have powerful stories to share, and lessons to teach. For whatever reason we tend to perpetuate the gap in the generation divide. But we need to start talking to each other. We need to listen and actually hear what the other says, we need to embrace each other.

Ep.19 Therapy. To DO or NOT to DO with Yuna
I am a big supporter of seeking professional help for your mental health. In many of our communities doing so could be frowned upon and seen as an act that can bring shame on your family. This means that we may know that we need to find help, yet we have no one to ask for guidance on how to go about finding a therapist, what to expect and how long to be in therapy. All those questions will be answered in this episode called Therapy to do or not to do with Yuna.

We all know that in Africa we have been sold the dream that the grass is greener on the other side. But is it really?
