John 14:6 (ESV)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
As the time of Jesus’s crucifixion approached and He told His disciples that He must die on a cross, their hearts were distressed.
They could not understand the things He told them, understanding only came as they looked back and, by the Holy Spirit’s aid, recalled what He had said.
As Jesus revealed the necessity of Hid death and departure from them, He also gave them some wonderful promises concerning the heavenly Father’s home and the possibility of a continuing and unending fellowship with God and each other.
John 13:33-35 (ESV)
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
In a way Jesus knew that His disciples could not understand that His death on a cross was the only way to provide salvation for humankind.
Today we can understand what Jesus meant when He said in John 14:6 (ESV)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
