An Economist on Socialism, Bubbles, and Bailing Out - Dr. Doug Cardell
SpaceTomatoesAn economist read the entire Democratic Socialists of America platform, and his verdict is blunt: it is not an economic policy, it is a wish list for a genie. Dr. Doug Cardell, author of Why Socialism Struggles and founder of evidentiary economics, returns to Space Tomatoes with Havok and LX to take apart the DSA's free housing, free education through a doctorate, 32 hour workweek, open borders, no police, no military wishlist, line by line, and then explain why a $40 trillion nation is the worst possible lab for the experiment.
The through line of the whole conversation: the economy, the environment, and the human body are all complex, spontaneously ordered systems. They organize themselves. Government's job is guardian, not tinkerer. Bail the plane out and the pilot takes bigger risks. Suppress every fire and the forest builds a catastrophe. Print past production and your wheelbarrow buys a loaf of bread.
