537: This Makes Us Unemployable
Can we save an old Arch install? We'll attempt a live rescue, then get into our tips for keeping your old Linux install running great.

As you may see in Matrix, I’ve started my at-home game for the 32-bit challenge. So far, failure has been everywhere. When I first suggested this challenge, I was curious what distro JB would choose because Nix isn’t available. It appears I was wrong in that assumption. I’ll be shocked if you don’t incorporate it somehow. PS: Don’t let the Loch Ness Monster know I gave you tree fiddy.

EPISODE
536: Plasma Power-Ups
The problem with GNOME's great news, plus our first look at Plasma 6. Then, the surprising place NixOS is getting adopted.

Additionally, for the 32-bit challenge, I don’t consider Spinning Rust a requi. SSDs were available, albeit the prices were ridiculous. If you can put a SATA SSD into whatever 32-bit system you end up with, you have my blessing. I want the challenge to be about testing the 32-bit hardware, not suffering with spinning Rust. (Looks like you got a bonus boost from me. Enjoy the extra sats.)

I’m catching up on the last few episodes. Great work on the Windows challenge and I’d like to propose another: The 32-bit Challenge. Using hardware that does not support 64-bits, can you survive a week or even a single day? I’m imagining something from the Athlon or Pentium 4 era. This idea came out of the remarks that 4 GB RAM isn’t enough for a modern system and it occurred to me that we used to run everything on far less. My first Linux install was 166 MHz Pentium with MMX with 16 MB RAM.

I’ll back up Oppy1984’s challenge and take it further: I’ll challenge you to a week using Windows as a daily driver. Specifically, show how to integrate Windows into an otherwise uniformly Linux environment.

I did something today I previously thought I’d never do: I unsubscribed from the Coder Radio feed. I’m a Jupiter Party member and still love JB, but CR has just become an hour of negativity. I get it that AI, Blockchain, and politics are negative aspects of the industry, but there are so many great things about being a developer that I don’t want to listen to a show that dwells on the negatives every week. PS: Boost amount isn’t random. See if you can figure it out.

EPISODE
527: The Internet is for Stealing JPGs
Shopify has a mind-blowingly obvious solution to too many meetings, a recent failure Chris is struggling with, and more.

I always appreciate the real takes and predictions on Coder, whether they are right or wrong. I make a few predictions too and have a decent track record. My worst was when I predicted that webOS would supplant Android as one of the main mobile platforms and HP announced they were killing webOS 2 days later. I still am bitter about that one. The developer story on Android is terrible.

EPISODE
514: Designing a Villain
Elon launches another AI company, leaks suggest Apple might enable sideloading, and why we should let Chaos-GPT run free.

Was there something we’re celebrating? I can’t remember. It must not be that important… J/K We love you, Wes. I don’t believe about all the mean things Chris says about you.

EPISODE
505: Keep Your Darn Secrets
We try out the most secure messaging app in the world, and Wes’ new note system that's so great you’ll want to abandon your current one.

I’m so glad someone else got my Internet Explorer joke. I had been looking forward to making it for almost a year. I wanted to wait longer to make it, but I had to balance waiting with the risk of someone else doing it before me. As for touching some grass, we got 6” of snow over the weekend so I can only just go back to browsing memes and listening to podcasts.
